The Key to Contentment

February 23, 2024

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In my twenties and thirties, I struggled a lot with what I call destination disease. You see, I constantly thought, “When I get there, I’ll be happy.” Or, “When this happens, I will be content.” Maybe you can relate.

Over the years, I’ve discovered that God strengthens us in the process—not just at the destination. The truth is if we cannot be content and embrace where we are today, we will never be ready to move into tomorrow.

But contentment isn’t something that happens overnight. The Apostle Paul actually writes in Philippians 4:11, Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content… Though many believe contentment is merely something we either have or we don’t, it actually has to be learned.

We often attribute our discontentment to not having enough, but it’s much deeper—it’s down inside of us. Friend, contentment is not a matter of stuff… it is a matter of your soul. Paul said he had to LEARN to be content through the process of disciplining the mind and training the soul—and it all starts with gratitude.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 paints such a clear picture, In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Wow! In other words, being content in God’s will for your life starts with gratitude—regardless of your circumstances.
