Growing up, I concluded that bread must have been Jesus’ favorite food—He talked about it all the time! Yet bread is actually a powerful word picture first seen in the Old Testament book of Exodus. There, we see God’s supernatural, daily provision of manna—bread from Heaven—for the children of Israel as they journeyed through the wilderness to escape bondage in Egypt.
So, what did Jesus mean when He said, “Give us this day our daily bread”?
While it’s a great practice to pray for our daily food, I believe Jesus was implying something much deeper. In fact, in John 6, Jesus broadens the picture by saying in verses 32-33, “Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Jesus continues in verse 35, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger…” In other words, Jesus was saying, “God is the Provider! I’m the bread. You feed on Me!”
Friend, our daily strength comes from God’s Word and presence. God the Father serves the Bread on the table, and we show up to eat by choosing to connect with God daily through spending time with Him. To discover how you can receive supernatural strength daily from God’s Word and presence every day, dive into this message with me…
