How to Overcome Fear

August 23, 2024

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

A big fear I’ve had to learn to overcome is hurricane season. August and September in the Gulf Coast can be a little unsettling for me. Over the years though, I’ve learned how to trust God and control my thoughts during this time like no other. Yes, I prepare and take precautions, but I’ve made a choice not to live tormented by fear!

Every one of us wrestles with fear at times. In Scripture, it’s clear there are two mindsets available to us. One is based on faith—where you trust God and believe His power is sufficient for your life. The other mindset is based on fear, where we live intimidated and anxious, and don’t trust God’s goodness and power.

We see these mindsets at war against one another clearly in the book of Joshua. You see, when Moses sent a group of twelve spies to explore the Promised Land, they came back with two different responses to the exact same situation. Ten of them came back saying, “The enemies in the land are greater than us… we should just pack up and go back to slavery.” However, two of the scouts—Joshua and Caleb—looked at the same land and said to Moses in Numbers 13:30, …“Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

Ten said, “No!” Two said, “Go!”

The circumstances were the same, yet their perspectives were totally different. Friend, when you have a faith-filled perspective, fear is overcome in your life.

Let me encourage you today—you are a powerful person in Christ and you don’t have to live as a slave to fear! To discover how to say “No” to fear by saying “Yes” to faith, dive into this message with me…
