When I was in 8th grade, I played spring football with the high schoolers. At the time, it was a big deal! I remember being so excited… until some of the seniors decided to give me a nickname. Since I was so much smaller and younger than everyone else, they called me Flea. Yes, like the little bug! At first it was funny… but then it stuck with me throughout high school and started to hurt.
We live in a world that works hard to label, tarnish, and downright destroy our self-worth by renaming us. This happens when others call us names which we then end up calling ourselves. Perhaps you’ve been labeled harshly or renamed by someone, and you’ve allowed yourself to believe something that’s not true about yourself.
I love what Scripture says in Isaiah 62:2-3, You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD will name. You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
Wow! In other words, while we might not see ourselves as diamonds, God sees a crown of diamonds in us and He gives us a new name. He lifts us higher according to the wonderful potential He sees in us. Although we are all born in and are marred by sin, when we return to God and are cleansed we become what God created us to be.
Before Christ, we were unrighteous—now we are righteous in Christ. We were unclean—now we are clean because of the blood of Jesus. We were purposeless—now we have immeasurable purpose and worth in Christ! Friend, let me encourage you today—God wants to rename you!
