This Is One of the Most Life-Changing Habits...

August 16, 2024

“Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever."

Joshua 4:7

One of the most life-changing habits we can develop is remembering what God has done in our lives. Speaking of memories, I’ll never forget God’s presence filling my car 25 years ago as my wife, Jennifer, and I were praying on the phone together about starting Church of the King. God told us, “I’m sending you across the lake to raise up a church to touch a region.” That experience has been a stone of remembrance to root our faith when times got hard.

One of the most powerful instances of remembering in the Bible takes place after the children of Israel cross over into the Promised Land. You see, after they had been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, God performed a miracle by stopping the Jordan River to create a dry path for them to walk across.

In Joshua 4:3, God instructs His people, “Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where you lodge tonight.” The Israelites then built a memorial out of these stones so they would remember the powerful acts of God as He led them across the Jordan.

Just like the Israelites, God wants us to have stones of remembrance—testimonies of what He has done for us. These stones of remembrance anchor our faith whenever we face trials and challenges. I encourage you to ask yourself, “What has God done in my life to bring me where I am today? How has God shown His faithfulness to me?”
