Back in college, I spent time serving in New Orleans at a large housing development just off St. Charles Avenue. Huge crowds—people of all ages—would gather for the evangelical rallies our team hosted. Over the years, I invited countless people to get involved. Everyone was eager to sing, share their testimony, or preach… but when it came to setting up chairs? No one volunteered.
That season shaped me. There, I learned a powerful truth: true servanthood isn’t about being seen—it’s about what you do when no one is watching.
We see this perfectly modeled in the life of Jesus. In John 13, on the night before His crucifixion, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples. In those days, it was customary for the lowest servant to wash guests’ feet. Yet, John 13:4-5 tells us, Jesus got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet.
Wow. Jesus—the Son of God—rose from the table, put on a servant’s towel, and knelt to wash the dirty feet of those who followed Him. He had nothing to prove. He wasn’t concerned with status or recognition. Instead of chasing a title, He picked up a towel—and served.
Friend, God has something great in store for your life—but it starts with a heart of service. When we embrace who we are in Christ, we don’t need titles to validate us. We simply pick up the towel and serve. And in doing so, we reflect the very heart of Jesus.
