Who Would Jesus Call A True "Influencer?"

February 14, 2025

“...But whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.”

Jesus—Mark 10:43-44

Many years ago when I was in college, the singles pastor in my church stepped into my life and saw potential in me. He saw beyond my messy past and helped me become who God created me to be. Without him and many others making the decision to help me, I wouldn’t be who I am today.

This is the power of having a servant mindset—which is something Jesus demonstrated for us throughout the Gospels. In Mark 10, we witness one such interaction. You see, two brothers—James and John—approached Jesus. They wanted a favor, asking in Mark 10:37: …“Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” James and John saw power like the world does. Success to them was about titles, positions, and prestige.

Yet Jesus turned the disagreement into a revolutionary lesson. In Mark 10:43–44, He said, “…But whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.” Jesus flipped the script on everything they thought they knew about influencing others. Then, in verse 45, Jesus summed up true influence this way, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Friend, this passage paints such a clear picture—a thriving life is found in using our God-given gifts, talents, and abilities to serve others and influence them for Christ. When we give ourselves in service to others, we find true fulfillment!
