Why The Most Generous People Are Often The Happiest

February 21, 2025

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Proverbs 11:25

Have you stopped to really think about the generosity of God? I mean truly paused to consider the lavish abundance He’s poured out in creation all around us. God didn’t have to make the world beautiful—yet He did. He could have made everything plain, yet instead He painted the world with a wonderful array of colors. From golden sunsets to majestic mountains, God’s generosity is fully displayed.

Creation points to a God who delights in giving good gifts to His children. As James 1:17 says, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Here’s something truly amazing—you and I are created in the image of this incredibly generous God. That means generosity is woven into the very fabric of who we are. Jesus is quoted in Acts 20:35, “…‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Why did Jesus say that? Well, generosity isn’t just good for the receiver—it’s incredibly beneficial for us as givers, too.

Science backs Jesus’ words up with some fascinating discoveries. Neuroscientists have found that when we give, the rewards system in our brains is activated. Science has also discovered generous people also tend to be happier and have stronger social connections. Furthermore, when we give, our bodies release a blend of feel-good hormones:

  • Serotonin—which helps regulate our mood

  • Dopamine—which is associated with pleasure and motivation

  • Oxytocin—often called the “love hormone,” which promotes bonding and trust

It’s as if our brains and bodies are saying, “Yes! Giving is what you’re meant to do!” This reminds me of Proverbs 11:25, which says, A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Friend, generosity is one of the keys to a thriving life! If you’re ready to start making The Generosity Decision daily, I’d love to share more with you in this message…
